Water for Future Texans

Water Conservation

  • Is water the new "Black Gold"? 1,851 gallons of water is needed to refine 1 barrel of crude oil
  • Less than 1% of all the water on earth is fresh water that we can actually use for drinking, transportation, heating and cooling, industry, and many other purposes.
  • More than 25% of bottled water comes from a municipal water supply, the same place that tap water comes from.
  • Automatic dishwashers use 2 gallons per use. It takes an average of 20 gallons of water to wash dishes by hand.
  • A dripping faucet can waste 2,000 gallons per year.
  • A leaking toilet can waste 200 gallons per day.
  • Taking a bath requires up to 70 gallons of water. A five-minute shower uses only 10 to 25 gallons
  • Why conserve?
    • Groundwater costs approximately $3.50 per 1,000 gallons delivered
    • Surface water costs $5.00 per 1,000 gallons
    • Brackish water costs $6.50 per 1,000 gallons
    • Desalinization costs $7.00 to $10.00 per 1,000 gallons
